HERO Returns to the Facilitation of EHM Research.
Background - The first four years of HERO operations concentrated almost
exclusively on facilitating employee health management (EHM) research.
HERO's work during this time resulted in the publication of break
through EHM research. After establishing a solid record in
research design and publication, HERO identified other opportunities to
enhance and expand the EHM industry. Thus, attention was directed
to the creation of the HERO Think Tank, the HERO Forum, and the HERO
Scorecard. Now that these important efforts are mature and
successful, the return to EHM research is under way.
Getting Ready - To start the research process, HERO began a
process to identify today's greatest needs in EHM research. An important
milestone in this process was a HERO Research Meeting, which took place
in Chicago on August 4, 2010. The 35 attendees at the meeting
focused on five questions, two of which were the following:
- "What kind of research is most important for
your organization?" A total of 36 research topics were identified and
discussed.
- "Which of these research projects have the
highest priority?" Each participant selected and ranked the four
research topics they considered most important. Based on 4 points for a
#1 ranking down to 1 point for a #4 ranking, the top four research
topics were: Corporate Culture (75 points); Business Pay Back /
Profitability (72 points); Scorecard Development (47 points); and
Incentives (31 points).
The HERO Research Committee has the responsibility to move these
research opportunities forward.
Current Activities - HERO has the following research projects are
currently in processes.
- Worksite Health Culture: A review of the
Knowledge Base of Worksite Health Culture. The intent is to
determine what we know, what we do not know, and what are the gaps
in worksite health culture. The study results are based on survey
results from a sample of 500 companies representing a broad
spectrum of business and industries. Submitted for peer review.
- Factors effecting presenteeism: to identify the
contribution that selected demographic, healthy behaviors, physical
health outcomes and workplace environmental factors have on
presenteeism. Work related factors had the greatest influence on
presenteeism. Personal problems and financial stress/concerns
also contribute to problems. Lower presenteeism will require that
employers have more realistic expectations. Submitted for peer
review
